About Our School
Our school is different from other English language schools because we understand the need for a totally personalised approach to English language tuition. It is for mature, committed and motivated professional people age 21 and over who want an English language course for personal and business needs. However we do accept 18+ years students for our ‘English for Foreign Nurses’ course.
We know from experience that most mature students do not like being in a large class of teenagers on a general English programme. They prefer to be in a group of like minded people who are committed to improving their language skills, and are not just here for a holiday.
At Spencer School of English we believe our students are intelligent enough to know their own level of English and what they need to improve.
Our academic staff check every application to ensure students are able to access our English courses. To help this we have created a profiling technique called SEAT- Self Evaluation Assessment Test.
When we receive an enquiry from a potential student, we ask you to complete a SEAT form. This contains English language questions based on the Common European Framework assessment, and asks what you think you need to improve. We also ask you to write a short description of yourself, and from these questions we learn more about your needs and ability to express yourself in writing.
The SEAT enables us to place students in the correct group and helps planning course content.
Spencer School believes in quality versus quantity, so with our small group sizes and more personalised programmes of study, we offer a really special course for students, whether you join us for just two weeks or longer.
Our classes have a maximum of only five people, so you get the benefit of highly personalised tuition, and will make far better language progress than in a larger class and at no extra cost.
Our class size is limited to only five students – why this number? Because from experience we know it is almost like having one-to-one tuition and your English will rapidly improve in this environment.
We sit together in a small group around a table, and this stimulates interaction, conversation, and lets us really get to know your needs, strengths, and weaknesses, and work with you on developing your English language skills. This is just not possible in a group of any larger size and the reason why Spencer School is so different.
Our location is the beautiful seaside town of Ramsgate in Kent. It is a town of lovely Georgian and Victorian architecture, fantastic bars and award winning restaurants, and miles of lovely sandy beaches and seaside walks. It is only thirty minutes away from the historic cathedral city of Canterbury , and seventy-five minutes by train to London.
There are good motorway links to major airports, the cross channel port of Dover is only fifteen miles away, and the Eurostar link with trains to Paris, Lille, Brussels, and other parts of Europe is at Ashford Station under forty minutes away. Low cost buses also connect our town to many other places of interest.
The school is run by the Principal David Batten, who lives in Ramsgate and was Director of Studies for the famous Regency School of English, and Bob Green, Director of Academic Studies.
Bob is Course co-ordinator, and spent many years teaching in both mainstream schools and at ‘English as a foreign language’ centres, also training and advising Kent educational establishments on English as an Additional Language. So you can be sure you are in safe, experienced, teaching hands with us.
We use only the best specially selected host families for you to stay with, most of which are within a few minutes’ walk of the school.
You can be certain of a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and above all, that your level of English will be much improved when you return home.
