Spencer School is also different from many other schools in that it uses the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) as a basis for our assessment policy.
CEFR is an internationally recognised standard that is increasingly used in many countries. It is particularly useful because it applies the same set of proficiency levels to all the areas of competence, namely the four basic skills (speaking, reading, writing, listening), communicative language (e.g. turn-taking, asking for clarification), types of interaction (e.g. obtaining goods and services, interviewing), and additional linguistic skills (e.g. vocabulary range).
It allows us to link skills in each of these areas with the student’s overall level, and build on their existing knowledge of English.
